ALBRIGHTON & DISTRICT CIVIC SOCIETY (ADCS)

(Albrighton, Boningale, Donington-with-Boscobel and Tong)

Parish Council Election
In the recent local elections five of our Committee members were elected as Councillors of Albrighton Parish Council. The Civic Society and the Parish Council share many common objectives, principally to work tirelessly and voluntarily for the benefit of all of the residents of our community. This cross-membership of each organisation, we believe, will ensure a greater understanding between them and an increased ability for achievement of these objectives more swiftly and efficiently.

Adopt–a-Station Scheme
We were invited by Alison Taylor, owner of the Platform Alehouse, to a meeting at the Station to hear from London Midland’s officer who leads the scheme. This is a national initiative run by all train operating companies, including LM, where local organisations provide volunteers to improve and maintain the surroundings of a station such as planters, flower beds etc. It has been found that this reduces vandalism and leads to a more visually pleasing station environment. The train operator would provide equipment and materials, and training, with the local organisation providing volunteer labour. They tell us that there will also be some benefits and we wait to see what they may be. We are trying to organise a public meeting, together with Albrighton PC and Donington-with-Boscobel PC, where the officer will come to explain the scheme and depending on resident’s reactions we will then see if the Society can participate.

Replacement of the Rail-over-Station-Road Bridge
Many will recall the very well attended public meeting in April 2013 which we organised when Network Rail and the Contractor made excellent presentations of the work carried out to remove, refurbish and reinstate the 1883 Footbridge – some 200 people came to hear the presentations which generated much interest. We are trying to organise, in conjunction with Albrighton Historical Society, a similar public meeting in the next month or so and our discussions with the Project Manager of AMCO, the civil engineering contractor which carried out the construction, have been positive and he is very keen to participate. We hope to have the LM officer for Adopt-a-Station initiative, as described above, join us on the same evening to explain the scheme. The Historical Society is planning to provide an introduction to the evening by way of a brief history of the line which will provide some context. The meeting would thus have several topics focussing on the Station.

Bus Service to/from Albrighton
A resident has contacted us to complain about the inadequate bus service, highlighting the following issues & is now starting a campaign and is looking for others to support some action:-
“New Arriva bus service Wolverhampton to Telford but unfortunately the route leaves out Albrighton.  We are just left with the Banga bus running 1 per hour, no evening service and last bus from Wolverhampton Monday to Friday is 4:35pm and on Saturdays 2:25pm, no evening service and no Sunday service”.

Please support your Society by renewing or joining now. We currently have more than 200 members & many of these volunteer to carry out various projects: weeding, grass cutting, planting bushes/trees/roses/daffodil bulbs, maintaining planters, encouraging the removal of eyesores, reviewing traffic issues, reviewing proposed developments ......and much more.

Please tear off the slip below and send your subscription/donation to 31/32 High St  or    56 Station Road OR renew or join at our stall in the High St at Albrighton Fayre on 8th July
